Darlin’ Deals Review: The Queen Mary Hotel!

Disclaimer: I was offered a complimentary stay aboard The Queen Mary to write a review. I was not persuaded to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Growing up in Southern California I have seen the majestic Queen Mary docked in its now permanent location in Long Beach many times, however I never had the pleasure of stepping foot onboard until a few days ago. I recently had the honor of being offered a complimentary stay aboard The Queen Mary to write a review and I have to say this was one of the highlights of my blogging career! If you don’t know much about The Queen Mary here is a brief detail of its history:

“Built in the United Kingdom in the 1930s, the Queen Mary’s rich history includes the Great Depression, World War II, the heyday of transatlantic travel during the late 40’s and 50’s and the eventual decline of ocean liners in the 60’s. Relocated to Long Beach, California in 1967, the Queen Mary is a historic reminder of a bygone era. Reborn as a hotel and attraction, the Queen Mary has become a Southern California historic landmark, offering people an opportunity to step back in time and experience the grand days of ocean liner travel.”Information courtesy of The Queen Mary’s website

Over the years I have had the pleasure of taking a few cruises aboard modern day cruise ships, so this was all I had to base my idea of what The Queen Mary would be like. Boy was I wrong! Upon boarding The Queen Mary I was immediately impressed with the ship’s décor and beautiful design. The walls were made of a rich wood, the type that seems to no longer be used in modern structures, and many fixtures appeared to be original pieces from the ship’s early years.

Stepping into my stateroom was like taking a Time Machine back to the 1930’s. The air/heating unit, bathroom fixtures, and toilet were old fashioned pieces. The room conjured up an image in my mind of the type of home appliances that my grandmother grew up with. No need to worry about being stuck in a room without modern conveniences, the room had a 32″ flat screen TV installed and the beds were Pillow-Top Serta Sleeper beds (basically like sleeping on a cloud). One of my favorite features of the room were the 2 portholes that offered a gorgeous view of the Long Beach harbor. The view made the luxury of the room that much nicer, nothing is better than a room filled with fresh sea air and a crystal clear view of the ocean.

In addition to the staterooms, that were turned into a hotel, The Queen Mary also offers a variety of Exhibition and Tours. I was generously offered complimentary tickets to The Princess Diana exhibition and the World War II tour. If you know me personally you are aware of my deep-love for the charitable life that the late Princess Diana led. I was beyond thrilled to view a collection of her personal effects and to learn more about the Princess that we lost all too soon. This exhibition was indescribably breathtaking. On display were numerous dresses, outfits, and hats all worn by Princess Diana. In my opinion the most unique pieces of the exhibition were the handwritten letters from Diana to friends and family. The letters truly gave insight into her caring demeanor as she wrote each one with a thoughtful and intimate tone. Unfortunately, this exhibition does not allow photography so be aware that you will have to soak in all of its amazing pieces using your photographic memory.

My husband’s favorite part of our stay was the World War II tour, he’s a huge war buff with World War II being his favorite historical war. I didn’t know what to expect when embarking on a 45 minute tour about a war from 1939, but surprisingly I was captivated by the information. We had a very animated tour guide who kept the group entertained throughout his narrative of how The Queen Mary was involved in the war. Our tour guide was so wonderful that he even involved my 4 year old son in his presentation a number of times which was helpful in keeping my little guy’s attention for the extended tour. I would highly recommend taking this tour, but please note that it is mostly an auditory tour and there is a good amount of walking involved (being 8 months pregnant meant naptime for me as soon as it was completed 😉 )

The Queen Mary is definitely an all-inclusive vacation location; it also features gift shops, arcade, Promenade Café style restaurant, Marketplace Café that serves Starbucks coffee, fine-dining at Sir Winston’s restaurant, and an onboard Observation Bar that serves great drinks for you to enjoy while taking in the gorgeous views.
